Goodwill Celebrates National Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Week

Goodwill recognizes the work DSPs perform in support of community living for people with disabilities

Maine – September 11-17, 2011, is National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), often referred to as caregivers, personal assistants, direct care or homecare aides, provide daily support services for individuals with disabilities.  Thanks to DSPs, people with disabilities are able to live fulfilling and independent lives and be active participants in their communities. The recognition week is organized by ANCOR (American Network of Community Options and Resources), a nonprofit trade association representing and advocating on behalf of the more than 700 private providers of services and supports for 385,000 Americans with disabilities.

Goodwill Industries of Northern New England employs more than 270 DSPs throughout southern and central Maine to support participants in residential settings and community programs. Goodwill manages 23 residences for individuals with an acquired brain injury, a developmental disability or other barrier to independence that requires the support of Goodwill staff. Goodwill DSPs provides individuals with a comfortable home setting, while ensuring that residents live independently as possible. Goodwill also offers community support services for individuals with disabilities or other barriers and for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. Goodwill DSPs work with individuals in community settings in Augusta, Lewiston, Portland and South Portland.

Governor Paul LePage has issued a proclamation recognizing Direct Support Professionals Week.
