Goodwill Industries of Northern New England is opening a new warehouse and recycling center in Gorham that will feature the nonprofit’s first “buy-the-pound” outlet, which gives customers discounts depending on the weight of items they buy.
The facility is located in a 106,000-square-foot building at the Gorham Industrial Park, with 65,000 square feet devoted to the warehouse outlet, which will offer deeply discounted merchandise, according to a press release. Goodwill bought the building to consolidate multiple warehouses and expand its recycling efforts, and the organization says the warehouse outlet model maximizes the value of donations and furthers its sustainability efforts in waste reduction and recycling. It estimates that about 200,000 pounds of trash will be diverted in the outlet’s first year of operation. Ten people were also hired for the new outlet. A grand opening is scheduled for Feb. 16.
Pricing for clothing, accessories, housewares, toys and shoes will range from $1.49 a pound to 79 cents a pound, with prices for books and other media ranging from 25 cents to $2 per pound. Furniture and other large items are individually priced.

Goodwill: You have no idea how elated I am about this store. My mother (now passed away) and I used to shop at the Augusta Goodwill by the pound. It was twice a month we used to go to the Augusta store. What great memories we had. We would laugh all the way home. I will be there on Thursday with friends Louise Mary and Connie. It will be a 2 hour ride for a bargain and a happy memory.
