Special Olympics has launched a campaign to end the use of the "R" word in our everyday language.
As the website points out, "That R-word is not "recession," but something more hurtful and painful: 'retard'. Our choice of language frames how we think about others.
It is time to respect and value people with intellectual disabilities. It is time to accept and welcome us as your friends and neighbors."
As an organization that helps people with disabilities gain jobs and independence, Goodwill Industries of Northern New England asks that you join us in signing the Special Olympics Pledge and help raise awareness of the language we use when speaking about others.
Join the close to 13,000 people that have already pledged to eliminate use of the "r" word.
The Special Olympics is calling for March 31 to be a National Day of Awareness to stop and think about the negative implication of the "r" word.
Please help us to "Spread the Word to End the Word" and pass this on to your friends and family. The more awareness we create together of the hurt this word causes for millions of people, the more we can creative positive change in the lives of people.
