Goodwill Receives YouthBuild Grant in Lewiston, Maine

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins (R-Maine) today announced that the Department of Labor is awarding a total of $1.3 million in YouthBuild grants to Goodwill Industries of Northern New England in Lewiston and Portland West YouthBuild.

"The YouthBuild program enables at-risk youth to get an education, gain vital job training, and better their communities," Senators Snowe and Collins said. "We are pleased to see this funding for Goodwill Industries and Portland West as it will allow these organizations to continue their vital work in the community and give young people the tools for a bright future."

Goodwill Industries of Northern New England in Lewiston will receive $1,098,982 for YouthBuild Lewiston programs including job training and education opportunities for at-risk youth. YouthBuild Lewiston performs numerous construction projects in the community including affordable housing projects, wheelchair ramps, and bike racks for local organizations.

Portland West, Inc. will receive $1.1 million for YouthBuild Portland programs such as an Individualized Development Account (IDA) savings program, training service dogs for people with disabilities and designing and constructing nature kiosks at Evergreen Cemetery.

YouthBuild is a non-profit organization which provides education, counseling and job skills to unemployed young American adults (between ages 16 and 24), generally high school dropouts. There are over 225 YouthBuild programs in the United States, with a total capacity of about 8,000 students yearly. Founded and directed by Dorothy Stoneman and John Bell, one of the main purposes of YouthBuild is to build affordable housing for low-income families. Since 1994, 84,000 youth have built over 18,000 units of affordable housing.
