My name is Donald Roberts and I developed my work experience and passionate work ethic while working at a poultry farm in Maine from 1969-1970. I was in my early 20s and tended to the baby chicks and cleaned the barns.  I was a hard worker, so I received praise from my employer and also started to quickly earn a bigger paycheck.  This was the first job I had where I learned about the importance of showing up on time and performing my work duties to the best of my ability.

In June of 1974, I moved and began receiving services at Dover Counseling Center, where I learned the woodworking trade. I made my living as a woodworker until 1976, when I moved to Portland. Once there, I learned about Goodwill’s employment services. I met with a Goodwill employment specialist in June 1976, who helped me find a place to live and a job

Donald-Roberts-Our-Story-Action-Shot-2-FINALWith the assistance of Goodwill, I was able to find a job at Gabriel Electronics, followed by a job at P&S Metal Products. Each employment move I made brought me more responsibility, financial gain and advanced the development of my employment skills. In June 1979, Goodwill helped me secure a job with Irwin Tool Company, where I worked until 1999. In October of 2009, Goodwill once again helped me find a job at Shipyard Brewing Company, where I currently work. My manager at Shipyard praises my work performance and he often calls on me to work more hours because of my devoted work ethic and impeccable work performance.  He told my employment specialist, “Donald is a very valued employee here at Shipyard.”

Whenever someone asks me about Goodwill, I can’t help but smile. My Goodwill employment specialist remains a steady presence in my life and always checks in to see how I am doing. She truly listens to me and guides me in positive directions, always a champion for my well being, and challenging me to be the best person I can be.

I am happy that I found Goodwill – the staff helps me and takes the time to understand my needs and hopes. So, thumbs up! Thank you, Goodwill!
