Pediatric Neurorehabilitation Services

Goodwill’s Pediatric NeuroRehabilitation Services offer comprehensive family centered rehabilitation for the treatment of children and adolescents who have a neurological impairment.

Because we understand the child’s need to learn and play, we incorporate these activities into their individual and group therapy treatments. We work cooperatively with the child’s support network and include ongoing input from the child, their family and school into all areas of treatment.

Rehabilitation Experts

Treatment of a neurological impairment or injury is highly specialized. Because we provide individualized services, our programs are able to meet a wide range of needs, from mild to severe. Our treatment teams are made up of highly qualified and experienced professionals who work under the clinical direction of a Neuropsychologist and a Physiatrist. The team provides the physical, cognitive and psychosocial retraining required for each child to reach their maximum potential.

Our programs utilize a child/family centered philosophy, meaning that treatment is family and child directed. We work closely with parents to foster optimal success.

Returning to School and Family Life

Some of the methods we utilize in assisting with the transition process include:

  • Evaluation of the change in academic and psychosocial  functioning following the injury
  • Neuropsychological assessments and recommendations for  treatment planning
  • Communication with external providers (school, physician,  insurance company)
  • Brain injury education and training for families and/or school  representatives
  • Family education and counseling
  • Development of individualized transition plans
  • Attendance at PET meetings
  • Recommendations for accommodations in classroom and home
  • Behavior management strategies for the child, family and school
  • Accessing external resources (Councils on Transition, Maine  Parent Federation, Southern Maine Parent Awareness)
  • Advocacy Education

Neuropsychological Evaluations

A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions using a set of standardized tests and procedures. Various brain related skills and abilities are evaluated.

Testing is typically completed in one or two visits. This is followed by scoring and analysis of test data. A comprehensive report, including results and recommendations will follow within two to four weeks after testing.
