Senior Community Service and Employment Program
Senior Community Service and Employment Program is Goodwill's newest Transition to Work program to meet the unique needs of older job seekers. This program serves the employment needs of low-income seniors in Cumberland, York, Androscoggin, Oxford, Franklin, and Sagadahoc counties. Goodwill arranges temporary work and training assignments for people age 55 and over whose income falls at or below 125% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
Our staff provide individual career counseling and job training, customized job placement, and support while on the job. These strategies are based on more than three decades of experience with older workers through operation of workforce and economic development programs.
While in the program and working at the training site, all participants are paid by Goodwill to give both the participant and the prospective employer time to get to know one another.
This program has been developed in partnership with the Maine Office of Elder Services and the federal Senior Community Service and Employment Program (SCSEP). Participants are asked to complete 20 hours per week of community service in a 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency or a government related program.
As participants develop their new work skills, placements can be made with private companies as part of our transition to hire strategy. This "try-out" employment service ensures that the career goals of the participant and business needs of the employer are met.
The goal of the program is for each participant to leave the SCSEP feeling confident and capable that they have the skills and ability to succeed in an unsubsidized full or part-time job of their choice.
Senior Community Service and Employment Program is supported by local businesses, privatee foundations, and the U.S. Department of Labor Employment & Training Administration under Title V of the Older Americans Act of 1965.
