Windham, ME – Goodwill Industries of Northern New England invites shoppers and donors to the Grand Opening celebration of its new Windham store and donation center on Thursday, May 24 at 9 a.m. Celebration activities include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 am, door prizes and weekend-long raffle. Customers will also have the opportunity to learn about Goodwill’s programs in Maine that help strengthen communities and get people back to work.

The new Windham store and donation center is just off Route 302 by Wal-Mart (31 Landing Road). Shoppers will enjoy a new 17,500 square foot building that features a convenient donation drive-thru and several environmentally-friendly aspects, including an energy-efficient HVAC system, polished concrete floors (which eliminates the need for harsh chemical cleaners), outdoor LED lights and large windows to reduce electricity use. The building is also engineered for Energy Star compliance, which means Goodwill will be able to apply for Energy Star status after one year of operation.

The new store also accepts used computer equipment through the ReConnect computer recycling program. Since the program launched in 2009, Goodwill has kept over three million pounds of computers and related equipment out of the landfill.

Randy Finamore, Senior Vice President of Retail, notes that the store location offers great accessibility. “The new store offers ease of access for shoppers and donors. Ample parking and a drive thru donation center makes the store fully accessible to members of the greater Windham community.” The new store will feature a wide variety of donated goods – whether one is looking for unique treasures or a fabulous new outfit, the store will feature clothing, jewelry, books, household items and furniture, as well as a limited selection of new items to create a complete shopping experience.

Shoppers and donors can read about fashion tips, shopping advice and project ideas on Goodwill’s “Thrifting Adventures” blog at www.goodwillnne.org/blog. Store and donation center hours are Monday through Saturday 9 am – 9 pm and Sunday 9 am – 7 pm.

“We are thrilled to expand our retail presence in the Windham community,” noted Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northern New England. “Our retail stores are vital in supporting Goodwill’s mission to help people reach their fullest potential through the power of work. Revenue from our stores is invested in programs that help Maine citizens find employment and strengthen our local communities.” The new Windham Goodwill store will employ nearly 50 full and part time staff.

Event Features Short Films and Live Director’s Discussion with Goodwill CEO Anna Eleanor Roosevelt

Burlington– On Thursday, May 17, the Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center in Burlington will host Goodwill Industries of Northern New England’s “A Circle of Films,” a presentation of short videos written and directed by young filmmakers from the New England region.

The featured filmmakers are Nicholas Brennan, Logen Christopher, Jeff Griecci, John Logan Pierson and Stuart Townsend. Goodwill asked each of the directors to write and produce a story and required only that they reference how the clothing and other items that are given a second life through Goodwill’s retail stores make possible nearly all of what Goodwill accomplishes behind the scenes.

“The idea of working with these young directors was to tell the Goodwill story and engage audiences in a fresh, non-traditional way,” explained Jane Driscoll, Goodwill’s vice-president of public affairs. “We see these films as a way to jump start conversations about the interconnectedness of all that we do at Goodwill.”

Following the screenings, a special, discussion led by Goodwill’s CEO, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, will explore the directors’ approaches to storytelling and how they chose to weave Goodwill into those stories.

“In one way, the Circle of Films project is also an extension of Goodwill’s core mission of helping people develop job skills,” said Goodwill’s CEO Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. “We’re seeing first hand how giving these young, emerging directors a shot at creating something completely new support their growth and development as the next generation of film professionals.”

The film festival is open to the public although seating is limited.

From Seacoast Online (Portsmouth, NH)

In swaps you give and you get. With the Women’s Clothing Swap that takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., while you might be giving (some of your clothing and accessories), you’ll be getting a whole lot more (including much-needed closet space.)

For any successful event, collaboration is key, and luckily for the Portsmouth Public Library, host of the event, they’ve got two keen collaborators on board. Jennifer Moore, library assistant, and Michelle Smith, communications manager, of Goodwill Industries of Northern New England in Portland, Maine.

Go & Do

WHAT: Third Annual Women’s Clothing Swap presented by the Portsmouth Public Library, Goodwill Industries of Northern New England and Strawbery Banke Museum

WHEN: Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

WHERE: Levenson room of the Portsmouth Public Library, 175 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth

CONTACT: www.cityofportsmouth.com/library; 766-1703; www.facebook.com/pplnh; www.twitter.com/portsmouthlibnh

Swap instigator Moore wanted to involve a fashion blogger in this year’s swap, so she did what any discerning adventurer does, turned to the Internet. She Googled up “fashion” and “Portsmouth” (or some variation) and voilà: She discovered Strawbery Banke’s latest exhibit “Thread.” The third annual swap is now presented by Portsmouth Public Library, Goodwill Industries and Strawbery Banke Museum.

Luckily, one thing always leads to another, and here’s what you can expect from your one-time visit to the Third Annual Women’s Clothing Swap:

What you give:

1. A bag of gently used, clean women’s clothing

What you get:

1. A bag of ‘new to you’ items

2. First 250 swap attendees will receive 2:1 coupons to attend “Thread: Stories of Fashion at Strawbery Banke, 1740-2012.”

3. First 250 swap attendees will receive their swapped items in a funky/functional cotton bag saying “Swap” and bearing the logos of Goodwill, the Portsmouth Public Library and Strawbery Banke.

4. An entry in a raffle for two tickets to the Passion for Fashion Gala on June 30, which features a celebrity designer’s runway show and champagne reception.

5. Get your picture taken in the Swap photobooth (the image will be e-mailed to you).

6. A feeling of community and good will because the remaining clothing and accessories will be donated to Goodwill.

When we stopped into the library last Wednesday, Moore and Smith were busy dressing mannequins in second-hand finery and compiling a film to help get the word out about the swap. When asked their style? Moore says, “I’m definitely librarian chic/vintage, but I’m trying to go more toward Brooklyn Bohemian.” Smith said, “I definitely shop thrift and lean more toward vintage. I like ’50s/’60s dresses.”

Three Portsmouth stores — Re-Enhabit, Second Time Around and Wear House — deserve kudos for offering up items so that when doors open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, there is enough clothing for swapping. In addition, a hearty bunch of volunteers will be at the ready to hang incoming items and sort them by color. “People like digging through a pile of red clothes, for instance,” says Smith, who is based out of Portland, Maine, but no stranger to Portsmouth.

As a special bonus, Moore mentioned they will be showing the movie “Bill Cunningham New York” at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 10, at the library, and a rack of swappable clothes will be strategically placed near the Levenson Room to get the swapping juices flowing. The film is about 80-year-old New York Times photographer who documents the way people dress. Moore has already pre-screened it, and says it is “light, and so good.”

If your interest isn’t piqued yet, read up on the Goodwill Blog that Smith heads up, featuring numerous guest bloggers: http://www.goodwillnne.org/blog. Moore also has a strong online presence at http://www.recovergirl.wordpress.com. Her blog is all about Sustainable Style. And, in case you’re interested in blogging yourself, you can head to the library where Moore teaches an introduction to blogging with WordPress class (next class is 3-4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 24, call 766-1720.).

Happy swapping!

As far as graduation ceremonies go, this was a simple one. There were no caps and gowns or speakers blaring Pomp and Circumstance. Instead, the conference room at the Goodwill Training Center in Gorham was filled with years of work experience from eight graduates.

“You guys ready?” asks Monica Driscoll. “Yes,” they respond in unison. “All right–and again thank you for all coming to celebrate with us. This is a great moment and you’re watching people achieve their dreams right now,” Driscoll says.

Driscoll taught these students as part of Goodwill’s Teach ME job training program. It teaches hands-on skills, along with softer ones like interviewing. Driscoll says it’s those softer skills that tend to be the biggest barriers to refugees and immigrants finding work.

“It’s not so much learning the task of the job–that’s the easy part. It’s learning the cultural difference and what that work expectation is,” she says. “And we spend a lot of time talking about the American work culture.”

Amatus Habonimana is from Burundi, where he earned an associates degree in accounting. He entered the program already working as a seafood sales associate at Hannaford. But Habonimana says for months he was confused about certain policies and procedures.

“Like, for example, closing on time,” he says. “I didn’t know why I must close on time, why I must do everything on time. And how the customer is king of the business.”

Habonimana says that in Burundi, time isn’t important, and the approach to customers is more hands-off. But now he understands their significance in American culture and he’s much happier at work.

Work in the U.S. was something that seemed out of reach for Consolee Mukamuligo. “This training is very, very important for me,” she says.

Mukamuligo is from Rwanda, where she ran her own business as an event planner. She’s been in the U.S. for two years, and says she really didn’t understand work expectations here, or even how to interview. Things like shaking people’s hands aren’t a custom in Rwanda, and, as a woman, neither is looking people in the eye. “It’s impolite,” she says.

Patty Wight: “Wow! So in Rwanda, as a woman you were not supposed to look people in the eye.”

Consolee Mukamuligo: “Yeah–it’s look like this, not like this.”

Now Mukamuligo looks potential employers right in the face, and she has a retail job at Goodwill. Another graduate, Olivier Mitima, just got a job at a Goodwill store as well. He came to the U.S. a year ago from Congo, where he was educated and worked as a medical doctor.

“When I took this course, it’s helped me to focus about customers,” he says. “And I think that customer, that word customer, it’s not only for a store.”

It’s for patients too, Mitima says. He volunteers with the Red Cross and hopes to one day practice medicine in the U.S. For now, he says he’s excited about his retail job because he can improve his English and save money to take classes.

“This is a wonderful foot in the door,” says Kim Moore of Goodwill. Moore helped connect the students with potential employers. “A lot of the students are incredibly interested in maintaining or pursuing further education. So with the retail sales, they’re able to have a little bit more flexible of a schedule so that they can still go to classes.”

Just as these new jobs are seen as stepping stones toward other careers, Goodwill’s Monica Driscoll says she thinks the impact of the program extends to other members of the refugee community.

“They all kind of work together, they communicate with each other, they go to church together, so they’re sharing information,” she says. “Where do we go to get this? How do we get career services? So, a lot of word of mouth within this community.”

The Teach Me training program has a high success rate. All of the graduates–save one who is awaiting the results of a recent interview–now have jobs.

For Immediate Release

May 3, 2012

“A Circle of Films” Festival Showcases Young Filmmaker’s Goodwill Stories
Event Features Short Films and Live Director’s Discussion with Goodwill CEO Anna Eleanor Roosevelt

Portsmouth – On Thursday, May 3, the Music Hall Loft in Portsmouth will host Goodwill Industries of Northern New England’s “A Circle of Films,” a presentation of short videos written and directed by young filmmakers from the New England region.

Dear readers,

We are thrilled to have Erin from Domestic Adventure guest posting for us once a month. Erin’s blog is filled with great DIY tips, repurposing projects, thrift finds and lots of great recipes. In this month’s edition of Inspiration in Every Aisle, Erin spots items you can find in most Goodwill stores and how just a fresh coat of paint can transform these items to work with your home.

Inspiration in Every Aisle: Paint Edition

I’m thrilled to be back with the May edition of my Inspiration in Every Aisle series! Going to Goodwill is a tempting venture for me. I always spy inspiration for more projects than I could possibly have time to achieve and more projects than I have room for in our house! That’s why these monthly posts are so fun for me—I can “window shop” for DIY projects and share my ideas with all of you.

Because nearly everything in life can be spruced up with a few coats of paint, I am pleased to bring you a post full of items that you could make your own with a few swift sprays and brush strokes.

First up is this lamp base. Sure, this green color may have gone out with the 80s, but the lamp has a solid structure and an attractive shape.

You could take a cue from Mindy at Heart Maine Home (another Maine blogger!) and coat the base with a fresh blue color and top it with a crisp white shade. Then it would really make a statement!

source: Heart Maine Home

I wish I had endless rooms in our house because I would fill them with cute pieces of painted furniture. This solid wood dresser looked promising…

Just think what its future could be like if it had this fantastic gray and white paint treatment, as created by Centsational Girl. The possibilities are endless!

source: Centsational Girl

And how nice is the shape of this old mirror? The mirror was in great condition, but the wood frame could use a little TLC.

I’m imagining that I would tape some newspaper over the mirror and spray the frame down with crisp, glossy coats of white or black paint, but this deep blue color in the mirror by Little Green Notebook is also lovely…

source: Little Green Notebook

I kick myself when I write these posts because I always wish I had snatched up a couple of these items for some projects. But alas, I’m not in need of a lamp, mirror or dresser at this very moment. But if you are, be sure to cruise through your local Goodwill with a creative eye and some spray paint in your back pocket!

Erin spends her free time blogging at Domestic Adventure from her home near Bar Harbor, Maine. She writes about finding fulfillment in the simple pleasures of domesticity while juggling motherhood, marriage and a full-time career in fundraising and public relations. She wants to make her cake and eat it too.

For Immediate Release

May 1, 2012

Goodwill’s TeachME Job Training Program Graduates Second Class
Program works with refugees and immigrants on employment and job training skills

Gorham – Graduates of Goodwill’s second TeachME (Teach Employment and Career Help Maine) job training program will graduate on Thursday, May 3, at 11:30 am, armed with skills to enter the local workforce. The graduation ceremony will take place at Goodwill’s Training Center in Gorham (34 Hutcherson Drive, Gorham Industrial Park).

TeachMe is an employment program for refugees and immigrants in greater Portland that offers job training for individuals seeking employment in their new place of residence. The program offers soft skills training, such as basic computer skills, interviewing, how to fill out a job application and professionalism. TeachMe also offers a hands-on and practical training component in the retail industries. The eight participants graduating this Thursday received job-specific training in the retail industry. Students received in-store training at the Goodwill store in South Portland (555 Maine Mall Road) for six weeks, in addition to classroom learning time. Participants gained skills in customer service, merchandising and pricing, health and safety and store operations, including donations handling and operation of the POS (Point of Sale) register system.

Graduates will receive a certificate listing their skills and competencies. Goodwill Workforce Solutions works with local businesses to help the graduates find employment. Several of the graduates have already found employment with Goodwill, Hannaford, Portland Regency Hotel and Walmart.

Participants in the program were referred by the Maine Department of Labor – Bureau of Employment Services, City of Portland Refugee and Immigrant Services Office and Portland Adult Education. Participant countries of origin include Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Somalia.

Funding for the TeachME pilot program is provided by Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc. (CCWI), one of Maine’s local Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs). CCWI covers a six county coastal region which includes Cumberland County. “CCWI is proud to sponsor TeachME,” said Antoinette Mancusi, deputy director of CCWI. “CCWI was able to utilized incentive award funds for this important project. The individual stories of the TeachME students who have come to this country to start a new life and a new career are truly inspiring. Many of them held high positions in their country, but they need new basic job training skills to start their career path here. That’s what TeachME can offer.”

Dear readers,
Erin from A Wife of Material shares some inspiration and an easy DIY project on how to transform a thrifted lamp into the perfect piece for any room in your house – what thrifted pieces did you find this weekend?

I am a constant decorator. When my husband has to work on the weekend, he never knows what he will come home and find changed. And when I go visit Goodwill on Saturday morning? Forget it. It’s like a scavenger hunt to see what I picked up for the apartment. Guess what I found today, honey!

One item I am always inspired by is a lamp. Lighting in a room is so important for creating ambiance, and the look of the lamp itself can add a pop of color or a touch of class to the whole room. There is no way, though, that I am willing to pay retail for lamps. Just for a stand I have to pay $15 to $45? No thanks! So I always check Goodwill’s house wares department to see what they have in stock. It’s always changing, and there are some great pieces that, with a little love and a lot of spray paint, could bring a whole new feel to one of our rooms.

Some of my main inspirations have come from home décor blogs on the internet. Tons of them have been showcasing lamps as statement pieces, and one statement I always fall in love with is the clear glass lamp. Colorful, plain, anything, I love it! Clear glass can go with anything, it looks chic, and it brings a lot of character into a room without screaming, “Look at me! I’m a lamp!” I have been in love with this style for a while, but most of my inspiration lamps cost as least $120 per lamp base. That’s just for one! But still, they are very pretty.

But! The last time I was in Goodwill, I stumbled across the holy grail of lamps: a set of clear imprinted glass lamps! Sure, the bottom of the base was gold, but I could fix that no problem. To find a pair of lamps in great shape is a rare event indeed at thrift stores, so I knew I just had to get them.

For a total of $8, I had new lamps and a whole new look for my home! I took them home, cleaned them up, and taped off all areas that I didn’t want any spray paint on. I love silver, so I chose a very shiny silver color from a local hardware store. I’m telling you, spray paint can change anything! On one relatively warm (for March) and not to windy day, I spray painted the bottom and harp sections with silver spray paint. Et voila! Brand new-to-me lamps!

Now the question becomes… which room gets these lovelies? Who cares! They’ll look great anywhere!

Dear readers,

Today is our last post of the Little Black Dress series. While we are a bit sad it is coming to an end, it also means that the event is tonight (and yes, you can buy tickets at the door!) We know what we are wearing, who is going and what we are going to bid on in the raffle.

To close out this great series (major thank yous to all our amazing guest bloggers who contributed – it was our best run yet!), Kristyle shares with us her unique approach in finding the perfect LBD for the event – Rent the Runway.

Little Black Dress Series: Reduce, Reuse, Rent!

Us fashionistas dream of the red carpet and all the glamor of a “designer dress.” But most of us can’t and/or don’t want to spend a month’s rent on a dress we will probably only wear one time. Well there is hope! And it comes in the form of Rent the Runway – a website that features all the top designers that rent out a night of luxury. It is very reasonably priced and you can feel good about “recycling” a dress instead of it hanging lonely in your closet for years to come.

The site is very user friendly – it shares style tips based on size, shape and body type. There are ratings from real users with pictures of real women wearing the dresses (a feature I find very helpful). I ordered my dress, by Badgley Mischka, a favorite designer of mine, with only a week until the Goodwill Little Black Dress Event. They sent me two sizes for the price of one dress. Not that I needed the extra size – based on their helpful tips, the size was perfect.

They arrived one day early and in a garment bag (which you get to keep!) that screams you’re a super star. Also included: a complementary package of “body tape” for hemming and sizing of the garment to ensure a secure and most flattering fit. You also get prepaid packaging that you simply put the dresses in, and place in the mail. This has been a great experience, one I would recommend and use again myself! I really feel in this dress i can stand out in a sea of LBD.
