Erin from A Wife of Material shares some spring cleaning tips on how to declutter and organize your jewelry – how do you organize your jewelry and accessories collection?
Hours of my life this past weekend were dedicated to decluttering and cleaning our apartment. For such a small space, we have packed in a lot of stuff! Beyond making my toss, keep and donate piles, I like to create new open spaces where items were originally spread out.
Case in point: my bureau top. Headbands, earrings, hair ties, bracelets… too much substance with not enough space. So I made it my mission to figure out how I could store all of those items without taking up much room, all while adding to the new classic feeling I wanted for our bedroom.
Originally, I had been inspired by the idea of having a glass dish with a pedestal that I could hang my dangly earrings around the outside and store the rest in the middle. After all, you are more likely to wear what you have when you can see it. If I tried to shove all of these into a jewelry box, I probably wouldn’t remember what I already owned. Most of what you see online for open storage options happen to be martini or margarita glasses. Not really my style. Plus, I need more room in the middle for my large bangle bracelets and headbands. I was left with a messy bureau and a big question mark.
The answer came in the form of the glass section in Goodwill. During my weekend stop, I thought I would pop over into the section just to see if they had any options. This glass bowl called out to me, and I knew I had to take it home! The rippled edge was thin enough for my earring backings, and the bowl in the middle was the perfect size. The price of $3.99 was pretty perfect too!

After a little cleaning, the bowl was shiny and ready for some jewelry adornment. I started by pairing up all of my earrings with dangle backings or large hoop openings. Keeping them together in pairs, I spaced them out as evenly as possible with the larger ones in the back as to not block the smaller pieces.
Next, my headbands took up the rest of the outside space. Because the middle is so big, there is enough room for my bangles, watches, and hair clips to go in on top of the sides of the headbands. Win!

So with just a few dollars, my bureau is much more organized and more beautiful. I will also get more use out of the jewelry that I already own because I will see it more and add it to my outfits! Who doesn’t like rediscovering stuff they already own?
How are you getting into spring cleaning? Make sure you look at your local Goodwill for some innovative storage ideas to make your home more organized and better looking!
