As an avid Goodwill shopper, I find it hard to buy brand name items at retail prices. Why spend ridiculous amounts of money on a pair of shoes that I can get at Goodwill for just a few bucks?! It is important, however, to know name brands and how much they cost in retail stores! Why? Because how will you know when you’ve found a good deal?!
I recently went on the search for a great pair of winter boots. Living in Vermont means ski lessons and sledding with the kids so often that my toes were beginning to wonder if I forgot about them! I knew a better pair of boots was in order. So I researched for the best brands and how much they cost. I began to hunt my local Goodwill stores a couple of times a week. I was having no luck and my toes were over it, so I splurged and purchased two very expensive pairs of boots. One for me and one for my son. I still managed to get them on sale; of course, it was much more than I would normally spend.
Naturally, a week later I found TWO pairs of brand names boots for only $7.99 at Goodwill! I was so excited! One of them was almost the exact same pair I had just bought for $60 new! It was too late to return the boots I already bought, but I purchased the Goodwill boots anyway. They will be great for my boys to grow into and to have as a pair of back-ups, which is definitely a must in a Vermont winter as well!
Had I not done the research, I would have never realized what a great buy those boots were! Here are my tips for staying in touch with the latest brands and styles:
- Google first! You will find what they are going for new, used in stores, and online. I usually have my smart phone ready and on hand to search items I find in the store, as well!
- Follow local style blogs. Not sure what’s in and what’s out? Follow a style blog to keep up on what’s hot! Look for a local one for the most relevant styles and brands to your area!
- People watch! When I was doing boot research, I watched people at the grocery store. Not in a weird creepy way, in a research way! It was a snowy winter’s day so while standing in the checkout line, I looked at people’s feet. I noticed the brands they were wearing and what kind of shape they were in. It sounds funny, but I’m telling you, it really helped!
- Be patient, if you can! Had I just waited a little bit longer, I would have saved myself a whole lot of money! I got impatient! Sometimes it is necessary, sometimes you just cannot wait! But if you can, hold on. Be patient. You’ll find that item soon enough!
