Using Found Art in Belfast

calendar July 14th, 2009 posted by Michelle Smith (171 total)

Edward AnthoisRoots and Tendrils is a great arts venue located in downtown Belfast.  They feature artwork and music by local Maine and New England artists.  It was recently brought to our attention that the current exhibit at the gallery could not have been possible without Goodwill.

That’s what we like to hear!

Artist Edward Anthonis has a new show on display called Reuse, Repurpose, Rebirth.  The show features found items and pieces of art that he reworks into new creations – the majority of which he found at the Belfast Goodwill!  Here is an excerpt from his artist’s statement:

I started to use latex house paint due to the shear volume of paint I was using, found I liked it and have stuck with it ever since. Also, it was cheap back in the day…

I have experimented with it on several different materials, and recently decided to try it on “found objects”.

Painting on or over other peoples work allows me to incorporate its flow, shape, color and size into MY work. My work is about containment, shapes, and flow primarily so when I spot something in an existent piece of work, that I know lends its shape or color to my style I am eager to adopt that imagery.

It is a great show and I think it inspires others to find the possibilities of new work in old objects.  The show is only on display until August 2, so be sure to check it out in the next few weeks. Do you know of other galleries in northern New England that features repurposed art? Leave us a comment and let us know!
