We continue our Halloween series this week with a great post from Caitlin of the Wore Out fashion blog, based in Burlington, VT. Caitlin put together three amazing costumes with clothing and accessories found at Goodwill – what are you inspired to wear this year?
Halloween! Costumes with Caitlin
Hi guys! Caitlin from Wore Out here, I don’t know about you, but I LOVE Halloween… and the discounted candy the day after Halloween! One of my favorite Halloween traditions is curling up with a mug of warm cider and watching Hocus Pocus, my favorite Halloween movie! It’s my own little fall tradition and I can’t wait to share it with my boyfriend in our new apartment.
I’m excited that Halloween is almost here and when Goodwill asked me to come up with a costume idea or two I was over the moon. In just one trip to my local Goodwill I came away with the makings for some pretty solid costumes and a ton of fun.
Sweet Gypsy Woman
Vintage Flapper’s Turban: Etsy ($12.99), Brooch: Goodwill ($.99), Caftan: Goodwill ($4.99), Wedges: Targe ($6.49), Bangles: Gifted and Thrifted

When I saw this sunny caftan on the costume rack in at the South Burlington Goodwilll, I did a little gig! It’s hand embroidered and despite a few small spots of discoloration, it’s in great condition. I knew I had to have it and when I remembered the vintage flapper turban I bought off etsy a few months ago, my gypsy woman costume idea was born.
The cherry on top of this awesomely bright costume is the purple brooch I found in a basket of lost earrings at the Goodwill jewelry counter for .99 cents! The other great part of this costume; if it’s chilly out on Halloween you can pile on the long underwear and no one will know!
Buffalo Jill
Red Felted Cowboy Hat: Goodwill ($.99), Satin Buffalo Bills Jacket: Goodwill ($4.99), Necklace: Gifted, Tank: Charlotte Ruse ($2.50), Capri Leggings: Forever 21 ($5), Cowboy Boots: Gifted
I did a post about this Buffalo Bill’s jacket a few weeks ago over at Wore Out. My boyfriend is a huge Buffalo Bills fan so finding this jacket during a weekly trip to Goodwill was a pretty big deal. Luckily I found this red cowboy hat at the same time so it seemed natural that they would go together. I upped the ante with my vintage red cowgirl boots and a conservative Buffalo Jill’s cheerleader outfit was formed. This is a fun, easy costume that can be work place appropriate if you pair it with a black tee-shirt and dark jeans. Fun, warm and easy to replicate with any sports team!
Crazy Daisy!
Heart Shaped Sunnies: Downtown Threads ($12), Tank (not seen): Old Navy ($5), Flower Lawn Ornament (worn as top): Goodwill ($ .99), High Tops: Gifted
Originally I bought this floral lawn ornament with the intent of using it with the caftan for a sunflower type costume but the idea of dressing up as a daisy slowly became more appealing. I think this glittery yellow flower with it’s short, decorative metal handle was originally intended to be a lawn or garden ornament but I had other plans for it. I folded the short handle over on itself creating an almost hook shape. I attached the flower to my torso by wrapping an ace bandage over my tube top and around my midsection; slipping the hook part of the handle into it. (My hair is covering it but I’m wearing a tube top underneath a loose brown linen tank top).

I added the fun sunglasses and my newly gifted purple high tops for a crazy colorful twist. This is a really fun costume and if it’s warm I’ll definitely be wearing it out this Halloween. The ornament was only $1 and I was able to use things I already had for the rest of the look and you can totally make it your own depending on what you have in your closet. The South Burlington Goodwill had a variety of colors and shapes in these lawn ornaments so you could get really creative.
What are you planning on being this Halloween? What are some of your favorite Halloween traditions?
