Goodwill Fall Essentials: Five “Must Have” Pieces

Dear readers,

As we enjoy the peak of fabulous summer weather, it’s also a good time to start planning ahead to make sure that all your fall wardrobe essentials are ready to go. Warm sweaters, skirts in orange, brown and red hues and transitional jackets are great staples to add to your wardrobe. Eva from the Nifty Thrifty Goodwill blog in Burlington, Vermont, shares some great fall essentials she found at our Vermont stores in South Burlington and Williston. What fall essentials do you look for when shopping?

Shopping for Fall Wardrobe Staples

Trends come and go, but there are a few items that every New Englander should have in their closet. These are pieces that should be the base of your fall wardrobe – and guess what? Goodwill is the perfect place to find all your fall staples.

Sweaters

Sweaters are a super staple because they’re so cozy. Additionally, they can help you transition your dresses and tank tops from summer into fall. At Goodwill, you will find all kinds of sweaters…my favorites for cool fall weather are cardigans and thick cable knit sweaters. I found this Ann Taylor cardigan for $7.99 and this Dockers sweater for $4.99.

Flannel

Flannel screams fall. The comfy material  and the oversized cut make flannel shirts perfect for this season. I love flannel because it can be cute (pair a shirt with leggings and some flats) or you can wear it when you’re raking the leaves. Adorable and functional!  Goodwill is a great place to find flannel shirts that you’ll wear every year when the weather turns cool, like this one I found for $2.50 in the men’s section.

Thick Skirts

Fall can have finicky weather…sometimes cool, sometimes warm. This is when a thick skirt should make an appearance. They’re great for your work or school wardrobe.  My personal favorite styles are high wasted pencil skirts or A-line. Just make sure they hit around the knee, because minis are for summer. Goodwill stores are full of these skirts in great fall colors. I got this vintage skirt for $4.99.

Something Corduroy

I think almost every type of clothing for men and women has been made in corduroy, and this versatility is what makes it a staple fabric. I personally love jackets/blazers, pants, and skirts in corduroy. They’re warm for fall and the material is comfortable and fairly casual.  You can easily find all these pieces at your local Goodwill in all deep fall colors and all shades of brown. This great Ralph Lauren Polo jacket was on sale for $4.00.

Closed-Toe Shoes

When the leaves start turning, it’s time to pack away the sandals and turn to closed toed shoes. They’re more appropriate for the cooler weather and will be the finishing touch to your fall wardrobe. Thankfully, Goodwill stores are full of great fall shoes in fabulous fall colors: brown, black, moss green, grey and midnight blue. Anything from flats to heels is great. I got these t-straps by Naturalizer for $2.50.
