Guest Blog: Selena of Apron Thrift Girl

We are excited to feature a guest blog from thrifter, crafter, writer and general extraordinaire, Selena of the Apron Thrift Girl blog.  Selena reminds us to look at items not as they are, but what they could be – read below about her creative use of a rusted display rack found at Goodwill.

Rack

I found this gold tone and slightly rusty display rack at Goodwill last week for $1.99. I rarely turn away from anything that stores, holds, displays and organizes. I’m going to be selling vintage wares at an upcoming holiday faire and this will be perfect for displaying vintage jewelery and buttons. The color wasn’t brilliant though and would clash with my 50′s & 60′s vintage items that I had planned to sell. I knew that it needed to be RePurposed.

I asked my fellow crafter and friend Cathe from Just Something I Made about painting this display rack and she suggested I try Sterling Silver Spray Paint. I drove down to a local craft store that afternoon and bought some. I couldn’t wait to begin.

Painted

I first washed the display rack to clean off any dirt or dust. I didn’t sand the rust areas because I kind of liked the added texture that it would leave under the paint. The can of spray paint cost around $8.00 and I only used less than 1/4 of the can. I plan to head back to Goodwill to see what else I could paint.

Rack1 I made a small display sign using thrifted rubber stamps and scrapbook paper.

Toprow For the rest of the year when I’m not selling vintage items, I’m planning to use this to store my own collection of necklaces, earrings and bracelets and keep it on a dresser in my bedroom.

Buttons Sometimes it takes just a little elbow grease, soap & water and paint to make something new again. When I am thrifting or junking at Goodwill, I keep my eyes open not to what I see “as is” but what items on the shelves could become.

  2. Selena!!

I can’t wait to see what else you come up with for the Winter Faire. This is some serious eye candy of Stampington and Company Quality.

Whoa is me when it comes to my pocket book and visiting your booth again this year!

  3. Excellent results. Stands for craft fairs can be shakingly expensive. Goodwill will always be a go-to for us art and craft vendors. You find not only cheaper stuff, but unique display pieces with character.
