I love Halloween – LOVE it! I always have. As a kid, it was all about candy but as an adult, it is one of the most creative times of the year. For me, I see it as a challenge. What can I do this year that’s original, interesting and of course, affordable?!
Ever since I started working for Goodwill over five years ago, I have had had a blast with Halloween. Goodwill is truly your “Halloween Headquarters.” It lends itself very well to getting your creative juices flowing. You might walk into a store one day and see a little trinket, or a movie, or a book and BAM! Your Halloween vision is as clear as day.
Picking out something to be is often the easiest part. For me, I just look at some of my favorite characters from film and literature and do my best to reinterpret them. Then the real fun begins – the search for just the right pieces that will come together in what could be “your best idea ever.”
Last year I think I did well (you tell me based on these pictures!). I was Scott Howard AKA Teen Wolf. Almost all of my costume came from Goodwill. The pants ($4.99), the tie ($1.99), the shoes ($7.99), the teeth ($0.98), the hair for my face and hands ($1.99) and that sweet, sweet mullet wig ($2.99). The jacket was my grandfathers and I already owned the collared shirt (but originally bought it at Goodwill for $4.99). All in all, the only thing I bought from a costume shop new face paint and the Spirit Glue to keep the hair on my face.
A pretty sweet costume, if I do say so myself, all for less than $40. The best part is that I got to do it all while supporting my community through purchasing a majority of my costume at my local Goodwill stores. Now I encourage you to get out there and see what you can do. Have a fun, safe, and happy Halloween!
